IUTH CMD Dr. Ya’u Gagarawa Celebrates Neurosurgeons on World Neurosurgeons’ Day

April 8, 2025

The Chief Medical Director of Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital (IUTH), Dr. Ya’u Abubakar Gagarawa has joined the global medical community in celebrating World Neurosurgeons’ Day, paying tribute to the remarkable contributions of neurosurgeons to healthcare and humanity.

In a message commemorating the day, Dr. Gagarawa—who is also a renowned consultant general and laparoscopic Surgeon—described neurosurgeons as “highly skilled professionals whose expertise, courage, and precision restore hope and transform lives.”

“At IUTH, we are proud of the progress being made in advancing surgical practices, and we recognize the critical role our neurosurgeons play in delivering quality care under some of the most complex conditions,” he stated.

Dr. Gagarawa, who assumed office as CMD in August 2024, has brought a strong vision for innovation and excellence to the institution.

Under his leadership, IUTH recently recorded its first successful endoscopic-laparoscopic surgery, a milestone that reflects the hospital’s commitment to modern, patient-centered care.

He further lauded the contributions of neurosurgeons globally, especially those serving in Nigerian institutions, acknowledging their resilience in the face of increasing challenges in the healthcare sector.

“On this World Neurosurgeons’ Day, we salute your unwavering dedication. Your work saves lives, restores dignity, and inspires the future of medicine,” Dr. Gagarawa concluded.

The CMD noted that IUTH recently hosted the 1st South-South International Neurosurgical and Neuro-Spine Conference, a landmark event that attracted neurosurgeons, specialists, and scholars from across the globe.

The conference, held in Okada, served as a platform for knowledge exchange, training, and collaboration aimed at improving neurosurgical care in Nigeria and beyond.

“The international gathering underscored our institution’s growing reputation as a hub for medical excellence and research,” Dr. Gagarawa said.

“We remain committed to building capacity, advancing surgical techniques, and improving patient outcomes through strategic partnerships and academic engagement.”

World Neurosurgeons’ Day is observed every April 8 in honor of Dr. Harvey Cushing, considered the father of modern neurosurgery.

The day highlights the achievements of neurosurgeons and promotes awareness of the vital work they do in neurological care.
